MVA FUND FRANCISTOWN OFFICE ENGAGES STAKEHOLDERS ON ROAD SAFETY

On the 9th July 2024, the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund Francistown Office convened a pivotal stakeholder engagement forum in Francistown, addressing critical issues surrounding road safety in Botswana and its profound socio-economic ramifications. The forum aimed to foster collaborative efforts among stakeholders to promote measures that reduce road injuries and fatalities. The event was graced by His Worship, the Mayor, District Commissioners, Government Heads of Departments, representatives from Parastatals, the Military Group Commanders, the Assistant Police Commissioner-North, and other key figures.

Participants were briefed on the various challenges that hinder the Fund from fully realising its mandate. Among these challenges are fraudulent activities involving claimants and service providers, which strain the Fund’s resources. There were also concerns about the inadequacy of rehabilitation facilities and expertise, particularly the shortage of ICU specialists and beds, coupled with escalating medical costs. These challenges underscore the need for enhanced oversight and improved healthcare infrastructure to support victims of road traffic accidents.

The forum acknowledged the devastating impact of road traffic accidents, highlighting the significant loss of young and economically productive citizens. The MVA Fund advocated for comprehensive road safety measures and impactful accident prevention strategies. Emphasis was placed on the need for public education campaigns, improved road infrastructure, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to mitigate the frequency and severity of accidents.

A forward-looking discussion centred on the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) and their potential impact on the Fund’s primary income source. The transition to EVs, while environmentally beneficial, could affect the revenue generated from fuel levies, necessitating a re-evaluation of funding mechanisms to ensure financial sustainability. Stakeholders were urged to consider the economic implications and prepare adaptive strategies for this technological shift.

The forum concluded with a strong commitment from all stakeholders to collaborate closely in addressing these multifaceted challenges. Moving forward, the outcomes of this engagement are poised to inform policy decisions and drive collective efforts aimed at improving road safety, enhancing healthcare services, and safeguarding the well-being of all citizens in Botswana. The MVA Fund reiterated its dedication to working hand-in-hand with all relevant parties to create a safer and healthier environment for the nation.
