SAFE MOBILITY CHALLENGE 2024: PROMOTING ROAD SAFETY AND VISIBILITY FOR VULNERABLE USERS

The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund hosted the second Safe Mobility Challenge in 2024, following the success of its 2023 debut in Mogoditshane. The inaugural event responded to the United Nations’ call for a Safe System Approach to road safety, focusing on vulnerable road users like pedestrians, cyclists, children, and the elderly.

The initiative emphasized responsible road sharing, adherence to speed limits in built-up areas, and educating vulnerable road users. Pedestrians were urged to stay visible, walk facing traffic, and use crossings, while cyclists were advised to ride with traffic, signal intentions, and wear helmets.

MVA Fund’s analysis of Botswana Police Service data revealed a troubling rise in pedestrian fatalities, growing from 21% of road deaths in 2019 to 32% in 2023. Young adults (18-35) accounted for 42% of pedestrian fatalities, while males dominated at 72%. Cyclist fatalities, however, remained low at 1.3% of total road deaths in 2023.

The Safe Mobility Challenge aimed to address these trends by advocating for reduced speeds, safer infrastructure like pedestrian walkways and cycling paths, and raising awareness of the catastrophic impacts of speed-related crashes. The 2024 theme, “Be Safe, Be Seen! Your Life Matters,” reinforced the importance of visibility and caution on roads.

The event brought together key partners, including the Botswana Cycling Association, Botswana Police Service, Emergency Assist 991, and new collaborators such as Botswana Life Insurance and Wimpy Game City, expanding its reach and impact.

Looking ahead, the MVA Fund plans to extend the Safe Mobility Challenge nationwide, fostering safer road environments and prioritizing the safety of vulnerable road users.
