MVA Fund Strengthens Road Safety Advocacy Through 2026 Safe Mobility Challenge

Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund successfully hosted the 4th Safe Mobility Challenge 2026 in Palapye, reaffirming its commitment to promoting road safety and reducing the impact of road traffic crashes across Botswana. The event was officiated by the Honourable Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr. Noah Salakae, who led as a Chief Walker, and delivered the keynote address demonstrating government’s continued support in advancing road safety initiatives.

In line with the Safe Mobility Challenge objectives the MVA Fund’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Michael Tlhagwane stressed the need for improving road safety beyond infrastructure upgrades, calling for a shift in mindset towards responsible road use and shared accountability among motorists, pedestrians and all stakeholders.

In his keynote address, the Minister emphasised that road safety remains a shared national responsibility, calling for increased vigilance and accountability among all road users. He further highlighted the urgent need to prioritise the safety of vulnerable groups including pedestrians, children, the elderly and persons with disabilities who remain disproportionately affected by road traffic incidents.

The Safe Mobility Challenge brought together key stakeholders, partners, sponsors and community members in a coordinated effort to drive awareness and inspire positive safer road use behaviours. The initiative aligns with MVA Fund’s broader mandate of reducing road traffic injuries and fatalities through public education, stakeholder collaboration and sustained public engagement.

Beyond raising awareness, the event reinforced the importance of collective action and sustained commitment in improving road safety outcomes. Reflecting a consistent message from speakers throughout the event, meaningful progress will hinge on sustained partnerships, active community participation and the everyday practice of responsible road use.

In his closing remarks, the Chairperson of Palapye District Council Honourable Kabo Ketshogile emphasized the urgent need to strengthen road safety awareness, calling on both motorists and pedestrians to exercise greater responsibility in order to curb road traffic accidents across the district.

The Fund extends its sincere appreciation to all stakeholders, sponsors and participants whose contributions were instrumental to the success of the 2026 Challenge. Their support reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that road safety remains a priority across all sectors of the society.
