The MVA Fund held a Men’s Road Safety Pitso in Palapye, bringing men from Palapye and surrounding communities together for an important conversation on road safety and the need for safer road-user behaviour.

Officially opening the Pitso, MVA Fund Chief Executive Officer, Mr Michael Mooketsi Tlhagwane, noted that the engagement was held against the backdrop of a concerning road safety reality , men account for approximately 70% of the estimated 400 people who lose their lives on Botswana’s roads annually.

He highlighted that the statistics point to the need to address male road-user behaviour and attitudes towards risk, particularly behaviours that increase exposure to road crashes and their devastating consequences.

The message behind the statistics is deeply personal. Behind every number is a father, husband, son, brother, friend, colleague or provider — someone whose absence leaves a lasting impact on the people who depend on them.

Speaking at the event, guest speaker His Excellency Lieutenant Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama and Bamangwato Kgosikgolo Kgosi Khama IV emphasised that behind every life lost is a father, husband, son, brother, friend, colleague or family provider. He noted that the loss of a man can push families into financial hardship, affect children emotionally and psychologically, and deprive communities of productive citizen.

The Pitso provided a platform for open and honest dialogue, allowing men to share experiences, reflect on their responsibilities as road users and consider the role they can play in preventing road traffic crashes.

The call is simple: make responsible choices, protect your life and protect the lives of others.
