Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund remains committed to improving the quality of life of people with disabilities resulting from road traffic accidents through its House Modification Benefit, a critical intervention designed to support rehabilitation, independence, and community reintegration.

Spinal cord injuries often have life-changing consequences, affecting mobility, independence, and the ability to participate fully in everyday activities. For many road traffic accident survivors, returning home after lengthy medical treatment and rehabilitation can present significant challenges if their homes are not accessible. Recognizing this reality, MVA Fund provides house modifications to ensure beneficiaries can safely and comfortably navigate their living environments.

The House Modification Benefit forms part of the Fund’s comprehensive rehabilitation programme, which aims to maximize functional recovery and enable injured people to lead productive and fulfilling lives. Modifications are individually assessed and tailored to meet the specific needs of each beneficiary. These may include the construction of wheelchair-accessible ramps, widening of doorways, modification of bathrooms and toilets, installation of handrails, lowering of kitchen workspaces, and other structural adjustments that improve accessibility and safety within the home.

By creating barrier-free living spaces, the Fund empowers beneficiaries to perform daily activities with greater independence, reducing reliance on caregivers and enhancing their dignity and self-confidence. Accessible housing also plays a vital role in supporting social participation, family interaction, education, employment opportunities, and overall community inclusion.

In a demonstration of its commitment to beneficiary-centered rehabilitation services, MVA Fund recently constructed a home in Tlhareseleele Village, Goodhope District for one of its beneficiaries, Mr Charles Lekgori. The house handover ceremony marked the successful completion of a house project for Mr Lekgori who sustained a spinal cord injury in a road traffic accident. The purpose-built home now provides a safe, accessible, and enabling environment that supports Mr Lekgori’s ongoing rehabilitation journey and independent living.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Acting General Manager – Customer Services, Ms Lydia Masilo-Nkhoma, emphasized that MVA Fund’s work is anchored in the belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to live a life of dignity and independence, regardless of their circumstances. She noted that through a range of interventions, including rehabilitation services, provision of assistive devices, vocational support, psychosocial care, and environmental modifications such as the house adaptation handed over today, the Fund continues to transform lives, restore hope, and strengthen communities across Botswana.

Ms Nametso Kwelagobe, who was the Project Coordinator and an Occupational Therapist by profession, reaffirmed MVA Fund’s dedication to ensuring that persons injured in road traffic accidents receive holistic support that extends beyond medical treatment. Rehabilitation is not only about physical recovery but also about restoring participation in family and community life.

The Fund continues to work closely with healthcare professionals, rehabilitation specialists, beneficiaries, and their families to deliver interventions that promote lasting recovery and improved well-being.
