The mobile alcohol testing vehicles worth P2.3 million are expected to ease off the police in having to take down their suspects to the police station for breathalyzer tests.
Speaking at the hand over ceremony, The Ass. Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr Gloria Somolekae said mobility was an essential elememt that enables the police to track and follow traffic volumes and deploy resources accordingly.
Through its Social Responsibility Initiative, the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund has promptly answered the call of Gakgatla Village Development Committee in the Kweneng District to assist them with bus shelters. The gesture signifies the Fund ‘s commitment of being a responsible corporate citizen by positively impacting the communities it operates in.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, Chief Executive Officer Mr Michael Tlhagwane said as the Fund they value partnerships and will continue to collaborate with communities in effort to promote road safety. He further said the Fund will continue to promote road safety in line with its mandate.
When receiving the bus shelters the area Councillor, Honourable Duncan Ramasiagopana applauded MVA Fund for their efforts in assisting Gakgatla Village. ‘’We are truly humbled by today’s gesture and initiatives like this one reinforce long lasting relationships for the benefit of all stakeholder’’.
The two bus shelters worth P66,870.00 and are branded with MVA Fund products and services and are expected to protect commuters in and out of Gakgatla Village from harsh weather conditions.
When officiating at an occasion to mark the 30th Anniversary celebrations of MVA Fund’s existence, Hon. Minister of Finance and Economic Development. Mr. Matambo said “The Fund continues to execute its mandate with due diligence and has impacted positively on the lives of those affected by road traffic crashes”
He noted that the road safety situation in Botswana one area that remains a serious cause for concern to the Fund.
The escalation of road crashes particularly severe injuries and deaths leads to increased claim costs which ultimately threatens the financial sustainability of the Fund. Road crashes claim an average of 420 lives every year in Botswana. Globally, 1.25 million people die each year due to road crashes. The health and socio-economic impact of road crashes is enormous.
Road traffic crashes are acknowledged as a major challenge that the country is faced with as accidents continue to claim lives. The escalating incidences of road traffic crashes presents a huge challenge to us, physically and emotionally. As road traffic crashes continues to escalate, they have a negative financial implication on the economy of our country.
It is common cause that during pilgrimages and other church activities a large number of members of church congregants travel, and incidence of road crashes that result in loss of life and injuries cannot be ignored.
The church as an institution plays a crucial role in the Fund ‘s endeavour to reduce road traffic crashes. The bigger question, is the church doing enough to curb these road crashes or imparting knowledge on their congregants on issues relating to road safety?
Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development in collaboration with Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA Fund) held an exciting fitness event at Tsholofelo Park in Gaborone as a way of promoting and enhancing good working relations and fitness between employees and stakeholders. The event also aimed at sensitizing participants on road safety especially in the view of the approaching festive season.
On the day there were different stalls from different stakeholders which brought their services closer to the people. Entities like Botswana Defense Force were the favorites to the public as they spiced the day with a good performance of Tug of War.
Chambers of Mines and Gaborone City Council Fire Department displayed a well-organized and orientated scenario on how to handle patients when you encounter and accident. The public appreciated the post-accident evacuation drill mostly as they learnt the necessary procedures to be followed so as to help those who are involved in vehicle accident. The educational simulations were highly beneficial to the participants as they were also taught accident scene safety tips.
“It is yet again a privilege to stand before you and address you on this special awards night. The year has been long and fraught with many challenges, but as the theme of our celebration this year states, we have conquered because we are STRONGER TOGETHER” Mr. Tlhagwane said when addressing MVA Fund Staff during the 2017 staff awards dinner.
He noted that the Fund’s strength emanates from its shared values which are indelibly engrained in the fabric of the organization.
“As you already know, this year the Fund suffered terrible setbacks in its financial performance. This state of affairs is squarely attributable to the ever escalating road crashes and underperforming fiscal markets. This has caused us to be frugal in our spending yet without compromising the service we offer to our valued stakeholders especially claimants. As a consequence of this turbulence, we have had to forgo celebrating this occasion in an elaborate manner as we have accustomed ourselves to doing” said Mr. Tlhagwane.
